enjoyed the “ice cream social” with the engineers. Free ice cream is good no matter where it comes from.

Cincinnati Zoo

Yesterday we took a trip to the Cincinnati Zoo. My parents are in town and we wanted them to see it since it’s so much bigger than the Riverbanks Zoo in Columbia. It was also Ava’s first trip to the zoo. She seemed to actually look at a few of the animals (when she wasn’t asleep in the carrier). I think she especially liked the Manatee Springs building, because the manatees and fish get pretty close to you.

I had forgotten how comfortable the zoo is, even on a 90º degree day; most of it is mercifully in the shade. And for a $7 day, there were far fewer people there than I had expected.

Happy 4th of July!

I went out and shot a few more fireworks last night. I think that should be enough to hold me over for a while!

I’m looking forward to a nice, relaxing day off and spending some time with Ava. I hope you have a wonderful holiday as well.

Checking Out Facebook

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketToday I decided to sign up for Facebook. Wow! It’s amazing how much nicer this is than the crapfest known as Myspace! Everything has a place on your profile so videos and pictures and music and quotes aren’t just thrown willy-nilly all over the page. Their photo application is much higher quality (and it has plugins for both iPhoto and Aperture), as are there videos. I love the mini-feed that lets you know what your friends have updated recently. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to find as many of my friends on Facebook as I can on Myspace, but hopefully that will change soon.

I was about to give up on the whole social networking thing thanks to Myspace, but Facebook is really a breath of fresh air. I look forward to seeing you there!

Jungle Jim’s Restrooms Nominated as Best in Nation

Photo Sharing and Video Hosting at PhotobucketThe restrooms at Jungle Jim’s have been nominated for the America’s Best Restroom Award from Cintas. I love their restrooms because the doorway is made to look like the outside of a Port-a-John, but it really leads to a hallway and some pretty darn nice restrooms.

Jungle Jim’s (or as I like to call it, Disney World for Fat Kids) is an awesome international market here in Cincinnati. They have sections for just about every nationality you can think of — from Mexican to Thai to Swedish — plus great produce, wine, cheese, meat and bakery departments. Amy loves that they have a Vera Bradley store inside. They’re even building a monorail (not that I know where the heck it’s going to go).

Be sure to vote for Jungle Jim’s restrooms! Voting ends July 31st.

Ava Video

Amy’s parents let us borrow their video camera, so we spent a few minutes getting some shots of Ava. I edited down some of the better ones to make this video.

The song is Lily Pond by Elizabeth Mitchell.

Finally, a breakthrough!

Adobe CS3Almost a month ago, I first attempted to install Adobe Creative Suite 3. Today – after five promised-and-not-delivered return calls from Adobe’s tech support team – I managed to get CS3 to install correctly. Over that month, I suffered through 12 failed installations with the “component install failed” error. Each installation took an hour to complete before the problems appeared.

What was the problem? Google Desktop conflicts with the Adobe installer. The Adobe tech who finally called me back just happened to mention it offhand. As soon as I uninstalled Google Desktop, the installation went through without a problem.

Sadly, the installation doesn’t show much fanfare when it’s finally successful. After so much wasted time, I was hoping for some sort of flashy fireworks, but all I got was “The installation completed successfully.” Needless to say, I was just a tad disappointed.
